Global climates warmed by approximately 0.5ºC during the 20th Century, and are predicted to continue warming by up to 5.8ºC this century (see the IPCC website for further information) .
Paleoecological studies suggest that many taxa, including insects and plants, should be expected to shift their distributions to keep track of these changes, rather than adapt or go extinct.
A range of studies have already shown butterflies and other taxa to be expanding their distributions that are consistent with a climate explanation at global, European and British scales.
